It was a very special day for the volunteers of the plant´s fire fighting team, and well worth the wait. Even the old W50 was driven out of the garage to make way for the new vehicle. The vehicle order had been placed last summer with the company Iveco in Ulm. Plant Manager, Dr. Michael Alberti handed over the keys of the new crew-vehicle. This is also good news for the surrounding community, in the case of middle category fire situations, the AL fire brigade can support the local brigades.

The old W50 has 35 ‘years of service’ behind it. Engine problems and technology that is outdated have predetermined its technical retirement. The tanker has now been replaced with a new crew-tanker. A vehicle that was built according to the equipment requirements of AL.

“With this special equipment, we as a plant are not only reacting to the current requirements for an industrial operation of this scale but also to its hazard classification,” explains Plant Manager Alberti. Because of the large amount of plastics and chemicals that are processed at the plant the new tanker is equipped with 3000 liters of water and 1000 liters of foam. In comparison, the older vehicle only carried 2000 liters of water and 500 liters of foam. “The newest technology will allow water to be added to the foam by an electronically controlled dosing device”, explained Meiko Lesser who is responsible for fire protection and waste management at AL Brotterode.

8 Fire fighters plus the driver will be able to get to the needed locations in the new all-wheel drive vehicle. Which could very possibly be in the community. “Middle category fire situations or threat to life or property, the AL fire brigade can support the local brigades”, stated Meiko Lesser proudly. When the AL fire brigade is to be deployed outside of the plant is determined by the county with its specified alarm and response regulations. Currently there are 31 active firefighters, 24 of whom are respiratory equipment carrie
